Pop all the lurky, swimming one-eyed fishes! Pop-pop is a relaxing and simple shooter for the Playdate console.

Controls:

Bubbles with a "?" mark in them gives you either a rocket, an extra life or some extra score

Special weapons:

* Rocket - when you get a rocket a little icon will appear beneath your health bar indicating how many rockets you got left. Shot a rocket with A button or with the down button.

* Bouncing projectiles - You will hear a "clink" sound when you get the bouncing projectiles. This will cause your projectiles to bounce off of the walls twice, allowing the shoots you missed to hit something!

Leaderboard:

You can now (from version 1.6) post your highscore to an online-leaderboard.
When you die, the game will present you with an option to post your score. Just scan the QR-code with your phone to get to the leaderboard webpage (http://jimmiejohnsson84.me/highscore.php) and enter your name plus the code displayed in the "post highscore menu" to enter your highscore to the leaderboard.

Bosses:

Fear the mighty blowfish!
This guy will shoot spikes at you and has a lethal pounce attack - during the pounce, the blowfish is immune to damage and will only get more enraged if you shoot at him so best avoid it!

Easter eggs:

The dopefish lives! Back in December 15th 1991 a game called "Commander Keen in Goodbye, Galaxy" was released by the now legendary game developers "Id software".
Tom Hall, who was the designer of this game back then created an enemy, "just a stupid green fish", called the dopefish. I'm a huge fan of both Tom Hall and the entire old crew of Id Software so I thought I should do my part and help carry the tradition on. If you start the game at December 15th there is a little treat in there for you (you can manually change the date on your play date if you wanna check it out).
This was added to version 1.7

A cute fun game. I did notice some bugs, like enemies occasionally getting stuck, and enemy waves only spawning on the bottom of the screen, making for some cheap deaths. The mini-boss could also be less bullet-spongey I think. But the base gameplay is fun and I LOVE the way you implemented the high score feature to go around the "no online stuff" nonsense for Sideloaded games!

Hi!

Thanks for the kind words - truely appreciate it!

Yeah, the spawning of new enemy waves can be a bit unfair sometimes. It does try to make sure they at least dont spawn right on top of you, but as it gets more and more crowded it can happen sometimes anyway. Perhaps I should make the player invincible to damage the first second or two of a new spawn of enemy waves.

The highscore feature was a bit of a brain scratcher :) the old NES password style was what inspired it :)

Thanks for responding! Would definitely love to see those changes in the future as I had a good time. But I can definitely see the passwords as inspirations, it's a really clever workaround.

Great looking game and lots of fun to play!  I find it pretty relaxing listening to the game music and popping fish.

Thank you :) I really appreciate the positive feedback. Glad you like it and keep checking back in, I do little updates on this game every now and then.

fun little game , the bullets moving gets realy hypnotic at times

Thanks! Got a couple of more ideas for it, a couple of more enemy types and some sort of "boss" would be cool to add as well.

got an error when I tried to side load

The bundleID field is missing from pdxinfo.

I think I've heard that happening if you try to sideload it using the web-browser, have you tried sideloading it with usb from computer?

I haven’t but will try that approach

I will get to fixing it so you can sideload it from the web too, I've just not gotten around to it yet. My apologies for that

(1 edit)

I found this isue with my game too and spent ages trying loads of different things. the first thing is to try a different zip program. i found windows built in zip didnt work but winrar zip option did.i tried just rezipping ur game and that didint woirk, it needs more info in the pdx . should read something like this then it seems to work :)

"
name=Pop pop
author=therussianbeargame
description=Pop pop
bundleID=com.therussianbeargame.Poppop
imagePath=images/
pdxversion=11000
buildtime=707837117"
Also with this if you then place a 350 x 155 px image called "card.png" in the images folder it will show up on the playdate menu

Hi LowtekGames - sent you a message on twitter :) I think I have a fix for this but I'd really like to verify it first so trying to get someone to try uploading it through the web browser. I sent you a link with the fixed version, if you got a chance to try it out let me know, that would be awesome. Then I know I can post my new build to itch as well with the proper metadata (pdxinfo).

I'm also happy to try out a new build if you send me one. (@livingtech on twitter.)

Thanks Martin! I think the sideloading hassle should be resolved now.
